Abalone shells are very popular for burning sage, palo santo and other botanicals used in smudging. With its iridescent shimmer, an abalone shell is an eye-catching piece that is not only beautiful but functional for smudging and burning herbal products.

In addition to being great smudge pots, our abalone shells make great cone incense burners, smudge stick holders, or white sage ashtrays. They can be used as crystal holders and make beautiful altar supplies. Their natural rainbow beauty adds elegance to any home or office.

How to Smudge

Begin by purchasing one of our botanicals. The two most popular are Palo Santo and White Sage. Hold a flame to the botanical until it begins to burn, then blow out and place it in the abalone shell or a smudge pot.* Let the botanical smolder. The smoke that fills the air is what you use to smudge in your space. You can simply walk around the area that you want to smudge, carefully waving the botanical in the air and letting the smoke fill the space.

What to say when smudging a home?

We recommend chanting a mantra or Om. You may also simply think positive thoughts and imagine you are filling the space you are “clearing” with love and light. Carry the abalone shell with you as you smudge so that the ashes fall in it. You may need to relight the botanical bundle and repeat until you have gone through the whole area. Don’t forget to smudge corners and tight spaces as that is where stale energy or negative energy can collect. Once you are done, relax in your newly smudged space and allow the peace to flow in.

* Always use caution when lighting objects and never leave burning objects unattended.
